Communication Support Worker - (CSW-BSL) – Liverpool

Barry Bennett are one of the largest companies offering specialist support to students in receipt of DSA (Disabled Students’ Allowance) throughout the UK. We provide a range of support specialised to everyone’s individual needs whilst studying at University.
We are recruiting a Communication Support Worker (CSW) to support students at University. This role would suit anyone looking for flexible hours. A range of hours are available but are subject to support requirements. You will be employed on a zero hour’s contract and assigned hours can therefore not be guaranteed.
- To assist students with a range of needs at University. It is particularly applicable for deaf or hard of hearing students who will require an individually developed programme.
- Support deaf and hard of hearing students requiring assistance in an academic environment
- CSWs offer communication support to aid learning for students
- Facilitate communication in lectures, workshops, and seminars
- You may be required to assist students with notetaking or translating information
- To help students navigate around their University campus.
The successful applicant will possess the following qualities
- Experience of provision of student support in Higher Education or other social or educational support settings.
- A good understanding of the nature of University level study.
- Excellent organisation and time management.
- Ability to work on own initiative, independently, and to deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly, professionally and sensitively, both verbally and in writing.
- A good understanding of the importance of integrity and confidentiality.
- Demonstrable general disability awareness.
- Willingness to adopt a flexible approach to working in a manner that is tailored to people’s individual needs.
The successful applicant must have the relevant qualifications and training.
- One of the following qualifications is required for this role:
- Signature Level 3 Certificate in Communication Support for Deaf Learners
- Level 4 Communication Support Worker (University of Greenwich)
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Communication Support for Deaf Learners (6259-07)
- A degree in deaf studies
- BTEC Continuing Education Certificate in Caring - Communication Support Work with Deaf People to June 1997
- Edexcel Professional Development Award - Communication Support Workers with Deaf People from September 1997
- Edexcel Professional Development Award - Communication Support Workers with Deaf Students from September 1998
- BTEC Professional Development Certificate - Caring (Communication Support Worker). Supported and evidenced by CPD in relevant subjects from the past two years.
- Graduate Diploma in Low Vision Rehabilitation
- Combined Mobility Officer and Technical Officer Certificate
- Original Certificate in Rehabilitation Work (Note: proof required of relevant work undertaken that is applicable to helping HE students.)
- National Occupational Standards (sensory standards) qualifications. Note: Qualifications must be relevant to providing orienteering training to disabled students. Rehabilitation Workers are trained to broad criteria laid out within the Sensory Services National Occupational Standards (NOS). The NOS were published in 2008 by Skills for Care and are available on its website. Four of the eleven standards relate directly to rehabilitation work and working with deafblind people. Standard nine is the most relevant to defining the skillset of rehabilitation work.
The successful applicant must have the relevant qualifications and hold the current memberships.
- Those working with a BSL user MUST hold a Level 3 qualification or higher in British Sign Language (BSL)
- PLUS one of the above CSW qualifications.
